COLLIE BUDDZ RETURNS TO VICTORIA with JESSE ROYAL! @ Capital Ballroom (formerly Sugar)
It's been six years since Bermudan reggae sensation graced the Island with his signature brand of reggae, dancehall and hip hop. COLLIE BUDDZ exploded on the reggae charts with his first self-titled album Collie Buddz that included hits such as "Blind to You" and "Mamacita." Since that time he has collaborated with most of the who's who of the reggae scene worldwide both in the recording studio and through his live shows.
This past May of 2017 Collie Buddz released his most recent album Good Life which he says was his first fully independently released album where he was "100% hands on." The album was produced in collaboration with his good friend "Supa Dups" who was responsible for some of his former hits on Collie Buddz as well as recent hits involving Drake and Rihanna ((Drake "Controlla",Drake ft. Rihanna"Too Good)
Good Life" as an album is a reflection of Collie Buddz's life the last 10 years. Ultimately it is about perspective, perseverance and working towards a solution.
Colin Harper aka Collie Buddz says, "I have been blessed with the best fans in the world who have supported me for years and patiently waiting for new music. I'm really excited to unveil this project to them and am already working on the next one. "
And if this show wasn't already exciting having Collie Buddz to begin with, one of Jamaica's most exciting roots revival artist JESSE ROYAL will be the guest of honour for the evening.
Having made a name for himself from America to Africa, Jesse Royal is fulfilling what was made known from a young age. His lyrics are being used as reference by the most recent wave of conscious youths, inspiring those to connect to their African roots and also to do well onto one another. Meanwhile showing appreciation for The Plant through addicting melodies about ganja, attracting a wider audience who can’t help but relate. Jesse’s songs range from spirituality to love and with every song he sings he’s always able to make a special connection with his audience local and abroad.

The Dreadnoughts, ATD, The Grinning Barretts @ The Waverly Hotel Cumberland BC
Fri. January 19th 9:30pm - 1am doors at 9pm $16.50 - $20 advance
It's been seven years since Vancouver's punk kings have graced the Island with their presence. The last time was a fundraiser for a member of Victoria's Hillside Hooligans who now we're glad to say is happy, healthy and active in the Island ska/reggae/punk scene.
The Dreadnoughts have become one of Canada's most exciting Celtic punk bands. Often referred to in the same vein as The Real McKenzies, The Dreadnoughts describe themselves as being, "one part roaring sea shanty, one part haunting folk melody, and a solid chaser of gut-crunching street punk." All of this equals one of the most entertaining and hard hitting Celtic punk bands on the west coast of Canada.
Joining them will be another friend of the west coast Canadian punk scene ATD short for "A Total Disappointment" (they're just kidding) also hailing from Vancouver. ATD have made a name for themselves in Vancouver's punk scene often playing at Pub 340 and opening for other punk Canadian legends and up and coming bands such as The Real McKenzies and The Flatliners.
Rounding out the bill will be The Grinning Barretts who will be making their Cumberland debut. More quality Celtic punk with these guys...The Grinning Barretts feature founding members of Skafest veterans The Kiltlifters. This BAGPIPE driven, Celtic infused, Guinness fuelled, 5 piece deliver a range of originals from floor stompin', table poundin' traditional Irish, to catchy, " waketheFup" Irish punk anthems.

Orilla & Luceo and Scram & The First Team comprised of Alex Miller, Daniela Jackson, Kady Savard & Bobby Arson).
Hip hop, drum n' bass, funk, reggae, soul and any other groove music mixed in is fair game for the evening.
We've known Danny Fernandez aka Def3 for years and it has been an honour to work with him and experience his work as a musician and one of Canada's best writers/muralists.
His new album Small World offers something for everyone and includes guest artists such as Del Tha Funky Homosapien, Masta Ace, Droop Capone, Skratch Bastid and more.
Mt. Doyle whom you may know from his band Ilvis Freshly will be performing with Orilla and Luceo. This trio will bring a mash up of hip hop, drum n' bass, funk and more party riddims for the evening.
Finally rounding out the bill will be Scram & The First Team who are Alex Miller aka Scram, Daniela Jackson, Kady Savard & DJ Bobby Arson. These four musicians motto is to spread truth, love and music to the masses. It's worth noting that all of Scram & The First Team have been and are presently in incredible projects. The Leg Up Program, Ill & I and Pocket Kings are just a few to name. Also Scram and DJ Bobby Arson were the founders of Outright Cypher - a freestyle weekly in Fernwood that has been around for years.
ST. PADDY'S DAY THROWDOWN featuring THE SENTIMENTS, HILLSIDE HOOLIGANS & SEXWEATHER! @ V-lounge
Sat. March 17th 9:45pm - 1:30am+ doors at 9pm $13 - $15 advance
Victoria BC Ska & Reggae Society is excited to present the 2nd Annual St. Paddy's Day Throwdown on St. Patrick's Day - Saturday, March 17th at V-Lounge in Victoria. Last year was such a blast we decided to do it again this year with some of our favourite ska, reggae, party bands in the Pacific Northwest & the Island.
So we decided to bring back The Sentiments from Portland, Oregon! Some of you have heard of The Sentiments as we've brought them in the past. In case you're not familiar they're a bad ass 9 piece ska/rocksteady/soul/reggae band that will keep you dancing from the first to the last note. Their last Island appearance was playing direct support to The Slackers in Dec 2016. Before that the band played at Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival at Ship Point Inner Harbour.
The Sentiments' arrival is exciting but the biggest story on this show is the fact that our favourite HILLSIDE HOOLIGANS are making a comeback taking several years off to relax and regroup. For those of you that have know the Hillside Hooligans the band consists of most of Victoria's legendary reggae/punk/ska band One Drop plus some other long time members in the Island ska/reggae scene. But if you think the fact Hillside Hooligans have been dormant for awhile must make them rusty, you're in for a surprise. During their hiatus the band has been practising consistently and recording new music. So it will be worth the wait when you see them comeback into action on St. Paddy's Day!
Rounding out this bill is Sexweather! You can't really label them with any specific genre as the band is all over the map. A mixture of rock, hip hop, punk and folk is what you'll hear presented in a Sexweather's unique way. Let's just say if you're in the mood to party Sexweather is a good band to have in your corner.
