Garden City Grooves is proud to welcome some of Canada’s finest, most powerful performers as we celebrate Black History Month with a jam-packed night of soul, hip-hop, afrobeat and funk. This very special night of music will be headlined by one of Canada’s hottest singers, the indelibly soulful TANIKA CHARLES. Tanika Charles' name has become synonymous with the finest grooves and rhythms in Canada. Her phenomenal album “Soul Run” was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize in 2016 and was a 2017 Juno Award nominee for best R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. Since the release of her landmark album “Papillon de Nuit”, Charles has been on fire – touring relentlessly and spreading the word of deep, true soul music from one coast to the other. Her show-stopping performance at Victoria’s 23rd Annual Ska & Reggae Festival (2022) – where she opened for The Wailers – has been on the lips and minds of everyone who was there to witness it and we knew we had to bring her and her band back to the capital.
This time she joins us in the warm, intimate confines of White Eagle Hall. Joining the bill for this celebration of Black Canadian Music is Vancouver-based singer and rapper, MISSY D. Singing and rapping in both English and French, Missy D has established herself as an artist who can reach across aisles and bring people together through her art. Able to spit rapid-fire raps one moment and then seamlessly switching to her powerful singing voice, Missy D on stage must be seen to be believed. You can hear her influences readily – India.Arie, Missy Elliot, Erykah Badu to name a few – but Missy D’s thing is wholly unique and completely her own. Kicking off this special night of music is the genre-defying ALPHA CENTAURI. Blending funk, hip-hop, afrobeat, 90s R&B and a splash of 80s retro pop, the Zimbabwe-born west coast transplant is quickly heating up the west coast, playing a relentless schedule of shows up and down the Island and into the mainland. Garden City Grooves is also stoked to welcome our resident DJ for the night – DJ Rossco. He'll be spinning some of the finest grooves from across the spectrum of music, making sure we're bumping all night long.
Come out and get involved for one of the freshest nights of music Victoria is going to see this winter!
