Day five of Victoria’s 26th Annual Ska & Reggae Festival features one of the best free show lineups in festival history, so best prepare to keep some gas in the tank for this one after four days of dancing.

Formed in Ontario almost 25 years ago, illScarlett plays a catchy blend of reggae, punk, and ska. Initially making a name for themselves through independent release and a few stints on the Vans Warped Tour (event founder Kevin Lyman hand selected them after they played a DIY show in the parking lot), the group eventually signed to Sony BMG Canada for their major-label debut, All Day With It. Lead single “Nothing Special” became a massive hit on Canadian alternative radio and Much Music, propelling the album to Gold certification. Now an independent operation, illScarlett is still going strong, returning to their roots with self-released punk-reggae tunes and an insatiable fervour for live performance. They’ve been long overdue for our festival so we can’t wait to have them close out the whole dang thing.

Also formed almost 25 years ago - albeit on the other end of the continent, MonteBong is a band from Guadalajara Mexico that plays a psychedelic and sultry take on ska and reggae. Inspired by the likes of Bob Marley, Hepcat, and Pink Floyd, MonteBong’s songs are packed with smooth grooves, sticky horn melodies, and a contagious sense of joy. Chicago’s Devon Kay & the Solutions, the self-proclaimed “World’s Best Band”, play an idiosyncratic take on punk that has seen them become one of the best bands to come out of the iconic music city in recent memory. Combining synthy emo-pop with tinges of horn-led ska, the group’s deep bag of memorable songs has taken them all across the US on tours with the likes of Streetlight Manifesto, Big D & The Kids Table, and Less Than Jake.

Supporting the show are two rising BC bands, Brasser and Razorvoice. Formed by longtime members of the Vancouver ska scene, Brasser’s scrappy ska-punk is packed with pissed-off attitude and infectious energy. You’ll dance, mosh, headbang, and have a wicked good time. Formed by singer-songwriter Ben Wittrock, Razorvoice’s gritty punk is packed with massive choruses designed for you to scream along with until you taste blood. As the architect of Victoria’s recurring Pop Punk Night, Wittrock and co. have built a strong community around a love of alternative music and culture, supporting dozens of local and touring acts in the process.
